With spectacular outdoor activities and a dynamic economy, Happy Valley-Goose Bay has endless opportunities. Located near the eastern coast of Labrador, this town of 7,969 people is a great northern getaway. The military is at the heart of life in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. It is home to the 5 Wing Goose Bay flight training institute, formerly a major base of operations for the Canadian, US, German, and British forces during the Second World War and the Cold War. Though the Canadian military continues to operate its NORAD CF-18 planes out of 5 Wing Goose Bay, the base is a site of important military activities for the British, German, and Italian air forces, providing a stable source of jobs and revenue for the town. This cultural diversity is also reflected in the locals schools, which include French Immersion, French Language, and German Language programs in their curriculum. At the continuing education level, the College of the North Atlantic and Memorial University of Newfoundland Labrador Institute both have campuses in the city. Not surprisingly, the town has many attractions celebrating its military history. One interesting example is the Pease Street Bunkers, which were constructed to provide protection during the Cold War. As well, the town has World War II bunkers that are open to the public for tours. Other military attractions include the Labrador Military Museum, the Northern Lights Military Museum, which showcases military artifacts, and Pine Valley Lookout, a radar site that provides some of the best views of the city and surrounding hills. This four-season locale is an excellent place for outdoor recreation. The winters are cold (-17.3C/1F in January) but that makes winter sports extra popular. Downhill and cross-country skiing can be found at nearby at Ski Mount Shana, Birth Brook Nordic Ski Club, and Minipi Wilderness Resort. During the mild summers (average temperatures 15.5C/59F), hiking and canoeing are the activities of choice. One of the best things about Happy Valley-Goose Bay is its low housing costs. That combined with incomes well above the average for Newfoundland and Labrador, make this town a great place to live. Come check it out.
