Hastings, Minnesota

Hastings, one of the oldest cities in Minnesota, is the county seat of Dakota County.

The city's location at the junction of the Mississippi, St. Croix, and Vermillion Rivers played a large role in the early development of its industry, which was based on the flour and linen mills that utilized the river for power. Today, Hastings can boast strong commercial and residential development that draws upon the natural beauty of those very same rivers, and the city's own history.

In fact, Hastings is busy redeveloping its historic Main Street. With its art galleries, antique shops, and fine restaurants, Main Street is the perfect place to wind down after work, take a Sunday stroll along the river, or just do some shopping.

Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy the activities on offer in and around Hastings. Mountain bikers will want to head over to Afton State Park, where the trails overlook the St. Croix River, and where backpack camping is also available. Visitors to Lake Rebecca Park can go fishing or picknicking. And the Carpenter St. Croix Valley Nature Center offers a number of hiking trails that wind through the park's tall pines, oak savanna, restored prairies, and wooded ravines.

Skiing is also available nearby. Welch Village Ski and Snowboard Area, the sister resort to Vail, Colorado, has 50 trails and 120 acres (49 hectares) of skiable terrain. It's just 15 minutes east of Hastings, and the ski hills are open from November to late March.

And Hastings also has its own share of community festivals, among them the annual Rivertown Days festival in July, and the St. Croix Valley Apple Festival held every October.

And as if all this isn't good enough, it's only 21 miles (34 kilometers) southeast of the major urban action of the Twin Cities.
