Home to Hay River Territorial Park, Hay River is an attraction for summer campers, who want to escape their city lives and get back in touch with nature. And you can be in touch with it year-round! If you want to be part of the big-city action once in awhile, there are daily scheduled flights out of town.

The town is also the barge port for the entire Mackenzie River system, so boat-watchers can see who is coming and going. Animal- and nature-lovers can also take the nearby Wood Buffalo Route to Wood Buffalo National Park, home to one of the largest free-roaming bison herds in the world, and a UNESCO World Heritage site. And for a little romance, stroll along the miles of sandy beach and watch the sun set over Great Slave Lake. If you're an adventurer in search of new languages, try your tongue at South Slavey and Chipewyan. Since the Hay River Reserve (largely inhabited by Slavey Dene) is right across the river, you will likely have plenty of people to learn from! Your first lesson: the town's traditional name is Xatl'o Dehe.
