Located on the eastern shores of San Francisco Bay in scenic Alameda County, the city of Hayward takes its name from William Hayward, a shoe factory worker from New England who came to California looking for gold in the 19th century. Hayward built the city's first resort hotel, and later became Road Commissioner for Alameda County. For those interested in learning more, the history of Hayward is on display at the museum of the Hayward Area Historical Society. Industry – both large and small – has played a role in Hayward's economic life since the Second World War. Tourism and agriculture, however, are the key pillars in Hayward's economy, and, because of its location, Hayward offers easy access to the Bay Area region's famous wineries and beautiful scenery. The San Lorenzo Trail, which runs along Hayward's shoreline, offers hiking and biking opportunities through various wetlands, and two state parks – the Sulphur Creek Nature Center and Don Castro Regional Recreation Area – are nearby. For man-made delights, Hayward is home to the Sun Gallery, a forum for local artists, as well as the Hayward/Russell City Blues Festival. For more information, see San Francisco.
