High Level, Alberta

High Level is located close to the border of both British Columbia and the Northwest Territories in northern Alberta's Peace River Region.

Long before a formal town existed in High Level, the area was used as a stopping point for First Nations people travelling through to Fort Vermillion for trade. Situated approximately 800 kilometers (495 miles) away from both Edmonton (to the south) and Whitehorse (to the north), today's community still serves as a crossroads for northern transportation.

High Level is a small, yet thriving, community of approximately 3,444 people. Recreational facilities in the city include everything from swimming to bowling to curling to skating to tennis. Like many towns further south, High Level has a public library, several schools, a RCMP detachment, hospital, and other community services. Regular commercial flights to the city maintain a direct link between High Level and larger centers.

Main characteristics of the Peace River Region are its boreal forest and numerous waterways. Key industries include forestry and oil-field production. Farming is also a major industry in the area, as long summer days and moderate temperatures create excellent conditions for grain production. High Level is known for having the world's most northern grain elevators.

Lying just south of the 60th parallel, High Level offers numerous opportunities for northern adventure. In the summer months, for instance, daylight reigns over the area allowing activities such as golf to continue past midnight. Turbulent waters mean white-water rafting beckons on the Peace River. In the surrounding forest, some of the world's few remaining Woodland caribou continue to graze. You can encounter the endangered whooping crane and hear their haunting cry. And you can gaze into the night sky to admire the aurora borealis (the northern lights).
