Hobbs is located in Lea County in southeastern New Mexico's desert plains, five miles (eight kilometers) west of the state's border with Texas. The county's economy chiefly involves agriculture and oil and gas, and Hobbs is considered the Oil Capital of New Mexico. Hobbs, which as a population of 28,657, is located 69 miles (111 kilometers) northeast of Carlsbad, about 100 miles (161 kilometers) northwest of Odessa and Midland, and 110 miles (177 kilometers) southwest of Lubbock.
