Honolulu, Hawaii

"He hale kou." That's the local Hawaiian saying for "you are always welcome here," a fitting signature for a state that has long welcomed the world to its stunning landscapes.

Hospitality and openness are the hallmarks of this island. More than 20% of the local residents speak second languages, including Japanese, Cantonese, and Filipino. As well, thousands of students graduate every year from the University of Hawaii's extensive cultural training programs.

Hawaii has gained a reputation as The Health State. As a result of its high quality of life, Hawaii has the highest life expectancy of any state in the US: 75.9 years, versus 72.6 years on the mainland. In fact, Japanese settling in Hawaii live longer here than they do in Japan. Also, it has one of the highest ratios of doctors to residents in the country and superior healthcare facilities that have established innovative links with mainland health research institutions. With its multicultural heritage, the state also has a strong tradition of combining the benefits of Western and Eastern therapies into its healthcare system. Of course, for luxurious care, there are plenty of spa facilities, set in areas with gorgeous mountain, forest, and ocean vistas, providing treatments such as seaweed wraps and lomi-lomi massages.

While the tranquil and friendly lifestyle may keep you healthy, you also need fun to keep you busy. Honolulu has plenty of that. With a population of 371,657, Honolulu is a busy hub. In my opinion, historic Chinatown is the most interesting neighborhood. There, you'll find fruit and vegetable markets, restaurants offering a variety of Asian cuisines, and a rich array of independent stores and merchants. The area even has its own Soho – the Nu'anau district (nicknamed Noho) – that is home to a pack of arts galleries and nightclubs.

For attractions, head to Pearl Harbor to see the USS Arizona Memorial, a monument to the six ships that were destroyed in the 1941 attack. And, in the city itself, you can see three monuments to Hawaii's royal past. The Iolani Palace, built in 1882, is a beautiful showcase of Hawaii's Polynesian heritage. Also take time to visit – or maybe even attend – the grand Kawaiahao Church, built in the mid-1800s out of huge coral slabs.

Honolulu's prime attraction, of course, is Waikiki Beach. With its stunning sands and warm ocean waters, you'll be in paradise whether you're catching some rays or swimming and surfing. In fact, the Honolulu area is one big stretch of paradise. With its pollution-free air and inviting climate, you'll never want to leave.
