The city of Hot Springs is located in central Arkansas, 53 miles (85 kilometers) southwest of Little Rock. It is the county seat of Garland County, and home to 35,750 residents. Naturally, the biggest attractions around here are the 47 springs flowing from the western slope of Hot Springs Mountain. For more than 200 years, they have drawn countless bathers seeking cures for various ailments. In 1832, President Andrew Jackson declared the area a federal reservation, making Hot Springs National Park the oldest national park in the US. Today, visitors can still see eight historic bathhouses along "Bathhouse Row," or get modern pampering in one of the area's many spas. You can also enjoy hiking, picnicking, scenic drives, or leisurely boat tours of the area. Other nearby natural attractions include the Ouachita Mountains, Lake Hamilton, and Lake Catherine. The Ouachita Mountains offer a wealth of recreational opportunities, including hiking, fishing, horseback riding, camping, and wildlife viewing. You'll also find a number of stunning golf courses and local businesses where you can buy or mine your own crystals. On the bank of Lake Hamilton lies the 210-acre (85-hectare) Garvan Woodland Gardens. In addition to beautifully sculpted landscapes, the site also features an outdoor amphitheater, and the Woodland Nature Preserve. The 1,940-acre (785-hectare) Lake Catherine State Park is a popular site for fishing and boating enthusiasts, and also offers interpretive hikes, boat tours, and cozy cabins. Just outside of the park lies the resort community of Diamondhead, which offers an 18-hole golf course and Olympic-size swimming pool that are available to park visitors. Hot Springs also offers plenty of indoor attractions, such as the Mid-America Science Museum, the Josephine Tussaud Wax Museum, and thoroughbred horseracing at Oaklawn. Kids of all ages will be delighted by a visit to the Arkansas Alligator Farm and Petting Zoo, or the National Park Aquarium, which offers the state's largest exhibit of fish and reptiles. Hot Springs also has many outstanding examples of Victorian architecture, and since it's the boyhood home of Bill Clinton, you'll find many presidential historic sites as well. For a great evening's entertainment, check out the latest production by The Pocket Theatre or the Hot Springs Opera Guild. The city is also home to a Fine Arts Center and numerous artist's galleries.
