Hyannis, Massachusetts

Hyannis is a popular tourist center on Cape Cod, and with a population of 16,223, is the largest of the seven villages that make up the town of Barnstable. It's home to the area's largest concentration of businesses, shops, motels, hotels, restaurants, and entertainment spots.

The other villages that make up Barnstable are West Barnstable and Barnstable Village, home to some wonderful Colonial architecture, as well as cranberry bogs and salt marshes; Marstons Mills, which is inland, and is home to beautiful ponds and lakes; and finally Cotuit, Osterville, and Centerville, which combine residential living and tourist areas.

The ocean breezes of the area provide a temperate climate, with July highs at 78F (26C) and January highs at 37F (3C). And speaking of ocean, you'll have many beaches to explore around town. In addition to those in Hyannis – Kalmus Park, Orrin Keyes, and Veterans Park – you can spend the day at Covell and Craigville beaches in Craigvill; Millway Beach in Barnstable Harbor; Sandy Neck Beach in West Barnstable; Hamblin's Pond and Burgess Park in Marstons Mills; and Hathaway's Pond in Barnstable.

When you've had enough of the beach, and want something different than fun days shopping in picturesque locations like the Hyannis Main Street/Waterfront Historic District, why not indulge your artistic side? Enjoy a show at the Boch Center for the Performing Arts or at the Cape Playhouse, America's oldest professional summer theater, or some music courtesy of the Cape Symphony Orchestra. Museums more your thing? Wander through the Cahoon Museum of American Art or the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum. And kids will enjoy the Toad Hall Classic Sports Car Museum, a private collection of more than 50 classic cars, and the ZooQuarium, which is home to native wildlife and aquatic animals, as well as farm animals.

And when you want to leave this active seaside community for a bit more of the big city, Boston is only 71 miles (114 kilometers) north.
