Indiana

This state has 6,195,643 inhabitants who are proud of their state's rich history. Between 1000 BCE and 700 CE, native peoples settled, grew crops, and began to build large earthen burial mounds, which can be seen today at Mounds State Park in the town of Anderson. The Lewis and Clark expedition to explore the uncharted West set out from Indiana in 1803. Among early settlers were the descendents of Abraham Lincoln. The state figures large in the Underground Railroad with 2,000 escaped slaves having passed through Quaker Levi Coffin House alone (what is now known as Fountain City). Indeed, a very interesting learning experience about the Underground Railroad can be had at Conner Prairie, north of the capital, Indianapolis. Here, visitors can participate in an interactive history program called Follow the North Star, in which they become runaway slaves and have to cover approximately two miles of rural and village terrain to escape all the while encountering people and events that demonstrate the mood of the 1830s. (Not everyone the participants encounter is helpful!)

The state also houses the John Dillinger Museum in Hammond and the Medical History Museum in Indianapolis. Many counties have covered-bridge festivals, giving people a glimpse of a beautiful form of bygone architecture. And if you visit the Willard Library in Evansville, which happens to be haunted, you may be able to converse about the old days with spirits that like Indiana so much, they have no intention of leaving.

Indiana is relatively small (the 38th in size among the 50 states) and mostly landlocked – having only approximately 50 miles of shoreline (including dunes and beach) along Lake Michigan. Its southern area is hilly, and the expansive central plain area, with its abundant grain fields, is known as the corn belt. One of the largest Amish farming settlements in the USA is found near the northern towns of Elkhart and Goshen.

It's a four-season state with annual summer temperatures averaging between 70 to 80F (21 to 27C), plus relatively high humidity, and winter temperatures averaging between 25 to 35F (4 to 2C).

The state offers many forms of do-it-yourself recreation – golfing, hiking, horseback riding, skiing, windsurfing, hayrides, rock climbing – plus the spectator variety, including the famous Indianapolis 500 and the Brickyard 400 car races, the Indiana Pacers NBA team and the Indianapolis Colts NFL team.
