Jackson, Kentucky

 

The city of Jackson is located in eastern Kentucky, 84 miles (135 kilometers) southeast of Lexington. It is the seat of Breathitt County, and is home to 2,490 people.

The community was named after President Andrew Jackson, and is part of Kentucky's Eastern Coal Field Region. The Breathitt Museum offers a comprehensive look at local history, and houses a great collection of artifacts, photos, and other resources. Jackson's culture and heritage are also celebrated during annual events like the Breathitt Heritage Fair and Breathitt County Honey Festival.

Jackson is home to the Sugar Camp Golf Club, which offers a nine-hole course and a clubhouse to relax in after your game. The Parks and Recreation Department oversees local parks, and organizes football and softball leagues, canoe rentals, and many community events. Douthitt Park is a great place for sports, canoeing, and lakeside picnics, while Pan Bowl Lake is a fishing enthusiast's paradise. A quick drive can bring you to the 1,230-acre (498-hectare) Buckhorn Lake or the stunning 78-foot (24-meter) sandstone arch of the Natural Bridge State Resort. And just west and south of town is the 707,000-acre (286,112-hectare) Daniel Boone National Forest, set along the Cumberland Plateau in the Appalachian foothills of eastern Kentucky.
