Jacksonville, North Carolina, is located near the Atlantic coast, 112 miles (180 kilometers) southeast of Raleigh. It is the county seat of Onslow County, and home to 66,715 people.

Situated near miles of beautiful beaches and waterfront parks, Jacksonville is an ocean playground ideal for boating, swimming, surfing, snorkeling, and many watersports. Visitors will also have the chance to spot numerous bird species and the endangered loggerhead sea turtle. The New River and its various tributaries offer great freshwater fishing, while saltwater fishing can be found in the region's many piers, beaches, and on offshore charter boats. Be sure to visit the nationally acclaimed Hammocks Beach State Park, which features a variety of habitats including maritime forests, sand dunes, salt marshes, beaches, and the 890-acre (360-hectare) Bear Island.

For recreational activities on dry land, Jacksonville offers two outstanding golf and country clubs along with a number of beautiful parks. The largest local park is Onslow Pines, which covers 55 acres (22 hectares) and is located three mile (five kilometers) south of the city. Here hikers can explore scenic nature trails, while sports fans can enjoy tennis, baseball, sand volleyball, soccer, and football. A great destination for all ages, the park also offers playgrounds, a seniors' recreation area, and family picnic sites.

Back inside city limits, you can take a leisurely stroll through the Mill Avenue Historic District, which includes 18 homes listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Jacksonville also offers a variety of family attractions, such as the Lynnwood Park Zoo, the Sea Gull Recreation Center, and the 30 Acres and a Mule Farm, which features gem mining, hayrides, stable tours, and many other activities. Another great attraction is the Coastal Plains Dragway which offers thrilling races year-round.

Jacksonville is located near the New River Air Station and Camp Lejeune, one of the largest US Marine Corps bases in the nation. To learn more about naval history, pay a visit to Battleship North Carolina in nearby Wilmington. This fully restored World War II battleship serves as both a memorial and a museum, and will gives a fascinating look into ship construction, Pacific naval battles, and daily life aboard the ship.
