Jefferson City, Missouri

Jefferson City, which has a population of 39,636, is the capital of the state of Missouri, and is the seat of Cole County. The city is located in the central part of the state, and is situated on the bluffs above the Missouri River. Jefferson City is located 32 miles (51 kilometers) southeast of Columbia, 134 miles (216 kilometers) west of St. Louis, and 157 miles (253 kilometers) southeast of Kansas City.

The city's Parks and Recreation Department has more than a dozen parks, and the largest, Binder Park, covers 644 acres (261-hectare) and is home to a 155-acre (63-hectare) manmade fishing lake. The city also has approximately 7.4 miles (12 kilometers) of greenway trail, plus an additional 14 miles (22.5 kilometers) of other trails. Speaking of trails, the 225-mile-long (362-kilometer-long) Katy Trail State Park, which stretches from St. Charles and Clinton passes through town.

Less than an hour's drive southwest of town is the Lake of the Ozarks State Park, which encompasses 17,441 acres (7,058 hectares), and has a manmade lake with 1,150 miles (1,815 kilometers) of shoreline. The area includes beaches, trails, and great golf courses, as well as abundant opportunities for boating, fishing, and swimming.

In town, residents can enjoy shopping, whether their tastes run to malls or small family-run shops, visit historic sites, such as the capitol building, which was completed in 1917 and was modeled on the nation's capitol, or the Jefferson Landing State Historic Site, one of the few surviving Missouri River landing sites, or take in a performance by groups such as the Jefferson City Symphony Orchestra, the Jefferson City Cantorum, The Little Theatre of Jefferson City, or the Stained Glass Theatre of Mid-Missouri.
