Johnston, Iowa

Johnston is a city in south central Iowa, located four miles (six kilometers) north of Urbandale and 13 miles (21 kilometers) northwest of Des Moines. It is part of Polk County, and is home to 8,649 people.

The community was established in 1905 as a station along the interurban railway, and was named after railroad freight superintendent John F. Johnston. Today, it is a fast-growing community that offers an excellent quality of life. The city's 400 acres (162 hectares) of parklands offer many recreational opportunities, and miles of trails are available for joggers, hikers, and bikers. The Johnston Soccer Club is part of the American Youth Soccer Association, and is a great place for budding athletes. Saylorville Lake makes an excellent weekend escape. Here you can boat, fish, and swim to your heart's content, or enjoy hiking, camping, hunting, and other outdoor activities.

Military history enthusiasts will want to visit the Iowa Gold Star Museum. Here you can learn about the exploits of Iowa veterans from the Mexican War of 1846 to the present, or delve deeper into history at the museum's reference library.
