Kentville, Nova Scotia

Located approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) northwest of Halifax, this charming community of 5,610 was named after Prince Albert, Duke of Kent, who visited the area in 1794.

Despite its British royal connection, it was the Acadians (French colonists), who originally settled the area in the 17th century. Following the Acadians, Loyalists escaping the impending Revolutionary War in the United States brought to the area their culture and unique, New England-style architecture, which can be seen throughout Kentville and Kings County.

For those interested in gaining a further glimpse into Nova Scotia's past, the scenic Evangeline Trail stretches all the way from Kentville to Yarmouth County (near Halifax). Sights along the way include everything from wineries to lighthouses to whales.

Kentville is at the heart of some of North America's richest farmland and is overflowing with maritime charm. Set amongst the cornfields and apple orchards of the Annapolis Valley on the banks of the Cornwallis River, in the springtime, the sweet scent of fruit blossoms permeates the air, and the city's bounty is celebrated each year at the Apple Blossom Festival and Harvest Festival. The fruits of the sea are also abundant. Clam chowder, Fundy lobster, Digby scallops, and an abundant variety of fish are found at the local restaurants.

While local industry primarily focuses on agricultural products, some diversification has occurred in recent years: In 1982, Michelin North America opened a production facility in Kentville employing approximately 1,000 people; at the nearby Annapolis Valley Regional Industrial Park, numerous other businesses are similarly expanding the economic scope of the community.
