Killeen, Texas

The city of Killeen is located in central Texas, 54 miles (87 kilometers) southwest of Waco and 68 miles (109 kilometers) north of Austin. It is part of Bell County. Killeen is home to 86,911 people and is one of the fastest growing areas in the nation.

The Fort Hood Military Reservation is located just north of Killeen, and has played a major role in the city's development since 1942. Many of the reservation's recreational facilities are available for public use, including a golf course, bowling lane, and in-line skating rink. The Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area (BLORA) is a very popular family destination, and offers swimming, boating, watersports, horseback riding, mountain biking, camping, and many other activities. From November to January, BLORA is transformed into a winter wonderland during the Nature in Lights festival. A five and a half-mile (nine-kilometer) route through the park is illuminated with festive creations, ranging from simple strands of lights to giant, colorful displays.

Other recreational facilities in Killeen include one recreation center, nine tennis courts, and 14 ball fields and parks. Basketball fans will be happy to know that Killeen will soon have its own home team: The Central Texas Diplomats are a member of the United Basketball League, and will begin regular games in 2008.
