Kirksville, Missouri

The city of Kirksville is located in northern Missouri, 74 miles (119 kilometers) northwest of Quincy, Illinois, 180 miles (290 kilometers) northeast of Kansas City, and 213 miles (343 kilometers) northwest of St. Louis. It is the seat of Adair County, and is home to 16,988 people.

Kirksville was founded in 1841. According to local legend, tavern owner Jesse Kirk got the community named after him by promising the surveyors free dinner and whiskey. The Civil War Battle of Kirksville took place on August 6, 1862, and ended in the retreat of the Confederate troops. The Adair County Historical Society Museum houses a cannon ball that was retrieved from the battle, along with Native American artifacts and medical exhibits. Kirksville has a pleasant college town atmosphere, and is home to A.T. Still University and Truman State University. The Still National Osteopathic Museum is the only US museum devoted to the history of osteopathic medicine, and features 27,000 artifacts, photographs, and documents. Truman State has an active Fine Arts Department, and offers regular art exhibits, concerts, and theatrical productions.

The Adair County Family YMCA is a great place for a workout, and local parks offer tennis courts, wading pools, playgrounds, and football, softball, and baseball fields. Fishing and hunting enthusiasts will find great catches at Hazel Creek Lake, the Montgomery Woods Conservation Area, and the Big Creek Conservation Area. The Sugar Creek Conservation Area covers 2,600 acres (1,052 hectares), and is a wonderful place for hiking, horseback riding, camping, and bird-watching. Hikers and mountain bikers can take advantage of the miles trails found in Thousand Hills State Park.
