Kitchener (pop. 190,399) and Waterloo (pop. 86,543) are two cities located within the Greater Kitchener-Waterloo area and are located one hour west of Toronto. Home to the technology-oriented University of Waterloo and the smaller Wilfred Laurier University, these two cities have the eclectic feel of a student town. You'll find bars showcasing local talent and famous bands as well as cafés and restaurants spiced with every ethnic flavor you can imagine. Owing in part to its well-educated population, the Greater Kitchener-Waterloo area has seen strong economic success. With its thriving manufacturing and technology industries, it has long boasted one of the lowest unemployment rates in Canada. As a result, newcomers flock here. But besides jobs, what are people attracted to? They love the sweet smells and fresh foods of Kitchener's 130-year-old tradition, the Kitchener Market. They also love having the arts at their doorstep: two major performing arts venues, Centre in the Square and the newly constructed Theatre & Company. For kids, the downtown features the new Waterloo Regional Children's Museum. Its exhibits are a maze of colors, shapes, sounds, and gadgets that teach kids about technology, math, and science in a fun and interactive way. For beauty, locals head to Victoria Park, which was designed in an 18th-century Romantic style. Walking among the scenic belts of trees and enjoying the waterfront views is the perfect way to relax. Outside the downtown, you'll find even more beautiful scenery on the Walter Bean Grand River Trail. The highlight of the Kitchener-Waterloo area, though, is its famous Oktoberfest celebration. After opening with the ceremonial "tapping of the keg," the city becomes one big party. The beer flows freely, the sausages are on the grill, and the city comes alive, as the concerts, great barrel race, and running boar tournament begin. During the festival, Kitchener hosts a Thanksgiving Day parade – the only one in Canada. With so much going on, residents of Kitchener-Waterloo are proud to call these cities home.
