The Town of La Plata is located in southwest Maryland, 31 miles (50 kilometers) south of Washington, DC. It is the county seat of Charles County, and home to 6,551 people. The town was founded in the 1870s, and owes its existence to the Pennsylvania Railroad. While walking past the tracks, you can still see the historic "La Plata Station," along with an authentic red caboose. Port Tobacco was the original county seat, and a rivalry arose between the two communities during the late 19th century as La Plata began to gain prominence. In 1892 an election was held to determine whether the courthouse should remain in Port Tobacco or be moved to La Plata. Although Port Tobacco won the election, the courthouse burned down less than three months later, necessitating the building of a new courthouse in La Plata. Another local landmark is the Christ Church of Port Tobacco Parish. Originally located in Port Tobacco as well, the church was moved in 1904. During the process, each stone was carefully marked with a number and carried by oxcart to La Plata. Then the church was rebuilt brick by brick, at exactly the same distance from the courthouse as it used to occupy in Port Tobacco! Lastly, be sure to visit the African American Heritage Museum, where you'll find artifacts from 1658 to the present, and a sobering reminder of the times of slavery. In addition to its colorful history, La Plata also offers great small-town pleasures like exciting finds at local antique stores, hearty meals in local eateries, and woodcarving classes through the Southern Maryland Woodcarvers. Looking for a great night's entertainment? The Port Tobacco Players put on five to six shows per year in La Plata, and also travels throughout Southern Maryland with their touring companies. On the weekend, head outdoors and explore some of the great recreational opportunities Charles County has to offer. Popular activities include biking, canoeing, kayaking, and nature-viewing. Birdwatchers will be delighted to know that the region is home to bald eagles and 321 other species, including wood ducks, barred owls, and great blue herons. Some of the county's bird watching hotspots include the Chicamuxen Wildlife Management Area, the Myrtle Grove Wildlife Management Area, and Purse Park. Like small-town living and the great outdoors?
