La Ronge, Saskatchewan

The town of La Ronge is located in northern Saskatchewan, 243 kilometers (151 miles) north of Prince Albert, 383 kilometers (238 miles) northeast of Saskatoon, and 605 kilometers (376 miles) north of Regina. It is situated on the western shore of Lac La Ronge, near the Kitsakie 156B Native Reserve and the Village of Air Ronge. La Ronge is the largest community in northern Saskatchewan, and is home to 2,727 residents.

For countless generations, the area around La Ronge was home to Cree-speaking Natives, and the Cree, the Metis, and other Aboriginal groups still make up a large proportion of the region's population today. Historically, La Ronge has served as a traveler's crossroads, trading outpost, and missionary outpost. Famous explorers like Alexander MacKenzie and Peter Pond, along with numerous fur traders have passed through the region. Today, La Ronge is the service center for much of northern Saskatchewan, and its pristine natural beauty also attracts tourists and outdoor enthusiasts.

The region's premier outdoor destination Lac La Ronge Provincial Park. Spanning 344,470 hectares (851,204 acres), the park encompasses all of Lac La Ronge and more than 100 smaller lakes, 1,305 islands, and vast tracts of pristine forest. It also includes cultural attractions like the Holy Trinity Anglican Church, which is the oldest building in the province and can only be reached by boat. Other must-see sights include the majestic Nistowiak Falls and the enigmatic pictographs (rock paintings) left by ancient Native groups.

Lac La Ronge Park also offers year-round recreational opportunities. Canoers can explore more than 30 water trails, including some that were used by Hudson's Bay fur traders. Anglers will find plenty of catches in the bountiful waters, with northern pike, walleye, and lake trout being the most common species. Those looking for a little more excitement will also find ideal sites for water-skiing and water-boarding. On land, you can follow the 15-kilometer (nine-mile) Nut Point Hiking Trail to a rocky peninsula that extends into Lac La Ronge. Along the route, keep an eye open for black bears, beavers, moose, and the many other wildlife species that call the park their home. The park also offers several camping sites, and while you're roasting marshmallows over the campfire, don't forget to check the night skies for spectacular sight of the northern lights. Even the Canadian winter isn't enough to keep locals indoors, and cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and ice-fishing are popular pursuits cold-weather pursuits.
