Louisiana

Probably best known for its wild Mardi Gras celebrations every March, Louisiana is a state with a rich history and a strong personality. A fusion of Spanish, French and African cultures, the Pelican state is renowned for its flavorful Cajun and Creole cuisine, soulful music, and steamy weather. Whether you're after down-home fare or fine dining, gumbo, crawfish, andouille sausage, tasso, jambalaya, blackened catfish and banana's foster are just some of the tasty mainstays that you'll find in the excellent restaurants.

If you like a little music to help you digest, you couldn't find a better place. Jerry Lee Louis, Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton all hail from here; jazz was born here; blues came here to rest its laurels; and local music, such as Cajun, Zydeco and R&B are still popular. (The result is a real treat: outstanding live music at every turn.)

With an infectious zest for life, the 4,496,334 Louisianians put a great deal of heart and soul into living life well and they welcome newcomers to do the same. A wealthy area, the former plantation economy has given way to the production of oil, petroleum, and natural gas, and tourism is also booming.

The tourist industry is of benefit to locals, too. Louisiana offers a great number of cultural, historical, and natural sights to keep you occupied in your spare time: national parks, plantation estates, historic homes, museums, art galleries, festivals, fishing, and canoeing. The Mississippi River, which runs through the heart of New Orleans, brings steamboat rides and waterfront dining.

And New Orleans is definitely the place to visit for Mardi Gras – and more! Simply put, in Louisiana there's something for everyone.
