Proud of its western roots but moving boldly into a progressive future, Lacombe offers the perfect mix of old and new. This town of 10,000 is located almost at the exact midpoint between Alberta's two major cities, Edmonton and Calgary. While each is about an hour's drive away, the shops and excitement of the smaller city of Red Deer is less than a 20-minute trip from the town. Lacombe was first settled as a village at the end of the 19th century, when the railroad arrived, and it has prospered ever since as an agricultural community. Many remnants of the town's beginnings can still be seen. The Edwardian downtown has recently been restored with the refurbishment of 35 heritage buildings and landscaping improvements that highlight the area's history. As well, the town is home to a blacksmith shop museum where skilled tradespeople continue to reinvigorate this treasured vocation. You'll also find plenty of events throughout the year that celebrate Lacombe's heritage. In the summer and fall, enjoy the homemade smells of the local farmers' market as well as festivals such as Lacombe Days and the Kinsmen Indoor Pro Rodeo. While the grain fields have traditionally provided Lacombe's bounty, the town has innovated in recent years and now boasts a diverse economic base. Dairy operations, hog and beef rearing, and greenhouses have added new layers to Lacombe's agricultural sector. Several manufacturing plants have sprouted up to serve local farmers, while the town has long been a major center for agricultural research supported by the federal and provincial governments. In addition to farming, several petro-chemical plants make their home here, providing good jobs and prosperity. Of course, one of the best things about Alberta is the great outdoors. While Lacombe has plenty of recreational facilities, the most spectacular spots are beyond the town line at the Ellis Bird Farm and the J.J. Collett Nature Reserve. You'll also find plenty of beautiful lakes and trails surrounding the town that make staying active a pleasure. In Lacombe you'll find plenty of opportunity and a strong, supportive community.
