Lacombe, Louisiana

The Louisiana bayou town of Lacombe is located in St. Tammany Parish, on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain. Bayou Lacombe and its surrounding area were populated by Native Americans when French Canadians Pierre le Moyne Sieur d'Iberville and four others arrived in the area in 1699.

The north shore is a scenic area of rolling hills, hardwood and pine forests, and cypress swamps, and offers plenty of places to go to enjoy the outdoors. Lacombe itself is home to the Big Branch Marsh National Wildlife Refuge, which encompasses 15,000 acres (6,070 hectares), including forests, beaches, and coastal marsh, with opportunities for hiking, birding, fishing, and boating. You can hike, cycle, ride, or blade along the Tammany Trace, a 31-mile (50-kilometer) rail-to-trail conversion that goes from Covington to Slidell, passing through Lacombe. A short drive away are several state parks, including Fairview-Riverside and Fontainebleau. You could also head out to the Pearl River Wildlife Management Area, which covers 35,032 acres (14,177 hectares), including forests, streams, and bayou areas (where you can meet alligators Scar Face and Big Al), and where you can enjoy camping, boating, fishing, and hunting.

Around the parish, you'll find numerous festivals to enjoy, many of which (not surprisingly) are devoted to seafood and/or water! For example, in June, you can enjoy food and music at Lacombe's own Crab Cook-Off.

And when you want to go to the big city, Lacombe has quick access to New Orleans via the Causeway (the longest bridge in the world!) or the I-10 Twin Span.
