Lansing, Michigan

 

Lansing is the state capital of Michigan, and the county seat of Ingham County. It is located in central Michigan, 91 miles (146 kilometers) northwest of Detroit. The city's population is 119,128.

The magnificent Michigan State Capitol is a great place to start your tour of the city. Designed by Elijah E. Myers, the building was completed in 1879, and is a designated National Historic Landmark. Lansing is also home to a large number of museums, including the Michigan State University Museum of natural history and culture, the Michigan Historical Center, and the Michigan Women's Historical Center and Hall of Fame. You can also explore different aspects of the region's history by visiting the All Around the Africa World Museum, the Museum of Surveying, the Telephone Pioneer Museum, and the R.E. Olds Transportation Museum, which houses a fine collection of antique automobiles.

Looking for a great family outing? Try a trip to Potter Park Zoo or the Minibeast Zooseum and Education Center. Kids can also have a blast at the Impressions 5 Science Center, which features a touchable sculpture, a bubble room, and a variety of other hands-on exhibits.

Lansing is home to a vibrant arts and culture scene. The Kresge Art Museum houses more than 7,000 pieces ranging from prehistoric figures to contemporary installations, and more fine art can be found in galleries throughout the city. On the performing arts front, there's the Greater Lansing Symphony Orchestra, Greater Lansing Ballet, and Boars Head Theatre. Major venues include Michigan State University's Wharton Center and the Charlotte Performing Arts Center in the greater Lansing region.

For an outdoor getaway, head to the Woldumar Nature Center for fantastic hiking and skiing, Hawk Island Park for boating, fishing, and beachcombing, or enjoy a picnic at the beautiful Cooley Gardens. Other popular destinations include the Fenner Nature Center, Sleepy Hollow State Park, and Frances Park, which features more than 155 varieties of roses.
