Lebanon, Tennessee

The city of Lebanon, pronounced "LEB-nun" by locals, is located in the Heart of Tennessee. What I like about this city is that it is a smaller community with its own identity with a world-class capital city close at hand.

Lebanon is a growing, bustling community, and an established tourist destination with the associated amenities. With a population of 20,235, it's the largest city in Wilson County, and boasts good restaurants, nearby golfing, camping, sporting events and, of course, great shopping. And if you're still in the need for a thrill after you're done those, the Nashville Superspeedway, can satisfy your need for speed. The track is located just outside of the city, and hosts major NASCAR and Indy events. Lebanon is also a college town, home to Cumberland University, a small, private, four-year liberal arts school.

Lebanon is the kind of city with deep roots that the phrase "down south" brings to mind. Established in 1801, it is known as "The Antique City of the South," with a picturesque downtown square, day attractions like Fiddler's Grove Historic Village, and the annual Wilson County Fair, which is consistently voted the best fair in the state of Tennessee. The Hermitage, the estate of former President Andrew Jackson, is also located nearby.

If you enjoy wild spaces, Cedars of Lebanon State Park is an impressive place to visit. It has vast cedar glades, where limestone rock comes so close to the surface of the ground that it causes the soil to be thin or absent. The park is home to unique natural ecosystems and 19 rare and endangered species of plants that grow nowhere else in the world.

The cedar forests also played a part in the naming of the city. During the early 1800s, many of the European settlers in the area were granted land ownership for their service during the Revolutionary War, and these settlers named the area after the biblical land of cedars, Lebanon. The mild winters in Lebanon also make it easy to get outside; and average annual highs are 90F (32C) in July and lows of 24F (-4C) in January.

And just 25 miles (40 kilometers) east is Tennessee's second-largest and capital city, Nashville.

Lebanon is a great place to live to reap the benefits of small town lifestyle and neighboring big city amenities!
