Leduc, Alberta

Leduc is a city of 15,032 in central Alberta, and is part of the Edmonton Capital Region metropolitan area. It is situated 35 kilometers (22 miles) south of Edmonton and 264 kilometers (164 miles) north of Calgary.

Oil and gas are the area's main industries, and the Canadian Petroleum Discovery Center is a great place to learn about the history of Leduc and the oilfields. After 50 years of fruitless exploration and 133 dry holes, oil was finally discovered on February 13, 1947 at Leduc No. 1. The discovery center is situated on this historic site, and features an impressive display of drilling rigs and equipment, models, and artifacts.

Dr. Woods House Museum is another notable historic attraction, and features furnishings and everyday items from the 1920s. The Leduc West Antique Society collects and displays artifacts from Alberta's pioneer days. The society also organizes yearly events such as a swamp meet, annual exposition, and a country harvest where you can try your hand at farming with antique equipment.

Local recreational facilities include 35 kilometers (22 miles) of walking trails, indoor and outdoor ice rinks, a skateboard park, tennis courts, baseball diamonds, and roller hockey site. The Black Gold Centre offers swimming, hockey, and curling, and also hosts great shows in its Performing Arts Centre. Golfers can perfect their swing at the Leduc Golf and Country Club or the Redtail Landing Gold Club in Nisku. Shalom Park is a world-class water-skiing site, and has hosted national and international competitions. For a fun family outing, lose yourself in the twisting paths of the Amazing Field Maze. After you've made your way out, spend some time visiting the farm animals, try a game of horseshoes, and spend the evening roasting marshmallows around a campfire.

Looking for some daytrip ideas? Half an hour's drive brings you to Edmonton and its performing arts venues, the picturesque North Saskatchewan River Valley, and the world's largest shopping wall! On the weekend, drive a few hours west and south to admire the spectacular beauty of the Rockies at Jasper National Park and Banff National Park.
