Lethbridge, Alberta

The city of Lethbridge, popularly known as "Alberta's Centre in the South," is located 210 kilometers (130 miles) southeast of Calgary on the Oldman River. Lethbridge can boast one of the sunniest and warmest climates in Canada, and it's also home to the Lethbridge Viaduct which, at 1,623.86 meters (5,327.625 feet) long and 95.7 meters (314 feet) high above river bed, is the world's largest railway bridge of its kind.

Originally called Coalbanks, Lethbridge had its start as a mining town in 1885. The name was later changed, and today, a number of factors have come together to help drive its bustling economy. Lethbridge residents enjoy a relatively low cost of living, and the city ranked seventh in a survey looking at small business growth in Canada.

But things aren't all work in Lethbridge. The city has a thriving arts community that includes a symphony orchestra and theatre by way of Lethbridge's New West Theatre. As well, the University of Lethbridge has its own art gallery with a permanent exhibit of Canadian and international art, and a performing arts center.

Concerts and sporting events can also be found at Lethbridge's ENMAX Centre, home to the city's Hurricanes, which play in the Western Hockey League. The ENMAX Centre was built in 1975 for the Canada Winter Games.

For a historical perspective on Lethbridge, a visit to the Sir Alexander Galt Museum and Archives is in order. And the city's Nikka Yuko Japanese Gardens provide the perfect venue for an afternoon walk. So too do Lethbridge's many green strips, as most of the Oldman River valley is dedicated city parkland.
