Lewes, Delaware

Lewes is located in southern Delaware's Sussex County, where Delaware Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean, in the state's beach resort area. Lewes, a community of 2,932, is set 40 miles (64 kilometers) south of the state capital, Dover, and 120 miles (193 kilometers) east of Washington, DC.

With a history dating to 1631, and thanks to its location in the first state to ratify the Constitution, Lewes proudly considers itself the "First Town in the First State." And thanks to its long existence, there are numerous historical buildings to explore in and around town, particularly in the Historical Society Complex. Some examples of historic sites to see include Ryves Holt House, which dates to c. 1665, and the Fisher-Martin House and Colonel David Hall House, which date to the early 1700s.

Lewes enjoys a mild climate, with January highs averaging 45F (7C) and July highs averaging 86F (30C). Since Lewes is set in Delaware's beach resort area, which includes the nearby towns of Rehoboth Beach, Dewey Beach, Bethany Beach, South Bethany, and Fenwick Island, residents can enjoy the weather on land and water. The city borders the popular Cape Henlopen State Park, which includes beaches, campsites, hiking trails, an 18-hole disc golf course, and more. And only a few miles south, on a barrier island, is Delaware Seashore State Park, where visitors can enjoy camping, beach activities, swimming, boating, and fishing. And speaking of the outdoors, golfers have numerous courses to choose from, both around Lewes and by taking the ferry across to Maryland.

And one more thing to consider … Delaware has no sales tax!
