Lewiston, Maine

The city of Lewiston is located in southern Maine, 34 miles (55 kilometers) southwest of Augusta and 39 miles (63 kilometers) north of Portland. It is part of Androscoggin County, and home to 35,690 residents. The cities of Lewiston and Auburn are situated on opposite banks of the Androscoggin River, less than one mile (two kilometers) apart, and are often referred to as the Twin Cities.

Lewiston was a major textile and industrial center from the late 1800s to the 1920s. The community's booming textile mills and shoe shops attracted a large number of French-speaking Canadians in the 1800s. A church called St. Mary's Parish was a major institution in Lewiston's "Little Canada" neighborhood, and was converted to the Franco-American Heritage Center in 2000. Today the culture center offers museum exhibits, and also functions as a performing arts and learning center. Another great way of learning about the city's past and familiarizing yourself with its modern-day businesses is to take a walking tour of historic downton Lewiston.

On the arts scene, Lewiston is home to the Bates College Museum of Art and the Public Theatre professional drama troupe. L/A (Lewiston/Auburn) Arts presents a number of art and humanities programs each year, including Music in the Parks, Readers Theater, Youth Theater, and Art and Ale. For everything from concerts, special events, and Lewiston Maineiacs hometown hockey games, head to the Colisee stadium.
