Lexington, Massachusetts

Lexington is a town located in eastern Massachusetts, just 12 miles (19 kilometers) northwest of Boston. It is part of Middlesex County, and is home to 30,355 residents.

The first battle of the Revolutionary War took place in Lexington on April 19, 1775, making Lexington the "birthplace of American liberty." Buckman Tavern is where the minutemen gathered while waiting for the arrival of the British troops, and you can still see a bullet hole created by a British musket ball on the tavern's old front door. Monroe Tavern also saw its share of action on that fateful April day, and was occupied by British forces for one and a half hours. President George Washington dined in this tavern in 1789, and memorabilia from his visit are on display along with other period artifacts. Also check out Hancock-Clarke House, where Reverend Jonas Clarke sheltered colonial leaders John Hancock and Samuel Adams.

The National Heritage Museum offers diverse and ever-changing exhibits, where topics range from military history and revolutionary inventions to pop music and whimsical crafts.
