Livermore, California

Hi-tech, fine wine, and a fondness for the arts – just some of the things that you'll find in Livermore.

Of course, it was all very different in 1835, when Robert Livermore first settled in the area. Livermore planted the first commercial vineyards in the region. And although the city has historically been associated with its agriculture, today it can also take pride in being a world-class center for high technology.

Livermore is located only 43 miles (69 kilometers) southeast of San Francisco. The city, with a population of approximately 73,345, is nestled in one of California's oldest wine regions, Livermore Valley Wine County. The area once had as many vines as its more famous neighbor to the north, Napa Valley, and still contains over 5,000 acres (2,023 hectares) of vineyards and 24 wineries.

Fine wine and fine arts seem to go together in Livermore. The city has its own opera (the Livermore Valley Opera), ballet (the Valley Dance Theatre), symphony (the Livermore Amador Symphony), concert chorale (the Valley Concert Chorale), and today even hosts its own annual Shakespeare Festival (the Valley Shakespeare Festival) every August. It may be that the arts provide a respite for those working in the complex world of hi-tech.

One hi-tech feature of the community is the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Originally built as a nuclear weapons design facility, it is one of the world's "premier scientific centers" – and Livermore's largest employer. And not to be outdone, the nearby Altamont Pass Wind Farms are the largest system of turbine wind generators in the world.

For outdoor enthusiasts, fishing, hiking, and camping are all available nearby in beautiful Alameda County. The area, featuring beautiful willow and sycamore trees, is known as the "place where the poplar trees grow." The trout fishing is good at locations like Del Valle Regional Park. And camping is available at Lake Del Valle.

So if you're looking for an art lover's paradise, combined with a cutting edge economy, and all nestled in one of the most beautiful wine regions in the world – Livermore could be the place for you!
