Long Branch, New Jersey

Long Branch, New Jersey, is situated on the Atlantic Coast, 44 miles (71 kilometers) northeast of Trenton and 49 miles (79 kilometers) south of Brooklyn. The city is part of Monmouth County, and is home to 31,340 people.

From the 1860s to the 1920s, Long Branch was one of the most glamorous and famous beach resorts in America. Eight presidents visited the community, and Ulysses Grant came here every summer of his presidency. Other high profile visitors included Diamond Jim Brady, the Astors, Fiskes, and Goulds, actors Edwin Booth and Lillie Langtry, and writer Robert Louis Stevenson. Today, you can still enjoy a beach at the Seven Presidents Oceanfront Park, which features a fishing pier, playgrounds, sand volleyball courts, and plenty of sun and surf. A Skateplex is also located in the park, and offers many thrills for skateboarders and inline skaters. For more activities, check out the many offerings from the city's Recreation Department. Newcomers should also pay a visit to the Church of the Presidents, an 1879 church that has been converted into a museum.

Oceanfest is held on the fourth of July each year, and offers sand sculpture demonstrations, great performances, food, crafts, and spectacular fireworks.
