Longmont, Colorado

The city of Longmont is located in north central Colorado, just 15 miles (24 kilometers) northeast of Boulder and 33 miles (53 kilometers) northwest of Denver. It is part of Boulder County, and has a population of 71,093.

Longmont is situated in the St. Vrain River Valley, and both the community and Longs Peak were named after explorer Stephen Long. The Longmont Museum and Cultural Center is a great place to brush up on local history, and features four galleries with permanent and changing exhibits. The museum's culture center also offers spring history lectures, summer concerts, and summer camps for youngsters. The Agricultural Heritage Center focuses on farming life from 1900 to 1925, and farm animals, implements, and a fully-furnished period farm house. The St. Vrain Historical Society operates several heritage buildings, including the Hoverhome, the Hover Farmstead, and Old Mill Park. Sandstone Ranch Park combines history with outdoor recreation. The site was a pioneer homestead in 1860, and is now a 313-acre (127-hectare) park and nature preserve with ball fields, a skate park, and trails for hiking and wildlife viewing.

Longmont also offers three area golf courses, pools and fitness facilities, and numerous parks and greenways. Barbour Ponds State Park is a fisherman's paradise, with trout, catfish, bass, and bluegill. The lake is also a great spot for bird-watching, and visitors might even glimpse a majestic bald eagle. The park is also popular for camping, hiking, and picnicking, along with ice fishing, skating, and cross-country skiing.

Looking for something a little more adventurous? The Mile High Skydiving is the state's largest skydiving facility and organizes 30,000 jumps each year. Longmont is also home to the Left Hand Brewing Company, which offers facility tours and tasting sessions of its famous beers.
