An outdoor lover's dream, Loon Lake is located in the heart of Northern Saskatchewan's Lakeland District, approximately 70 kilometers (43 miles) north of Lloydminster.

The main attraction for the aforementioned outdoorsy types is nearby Makwa Lake Provincial Park, an expanse of wilderness designated as a natural environment park, where authorities monitor nature rather than interfere with it. Here you'll find abundant opportunities for hiking, camping, and swimming. The name Makwa is taken from the Cree word for Loon, so, not surprisingly, as dusk settles on the park, the birds' haunting call fills the air.

Despite being a small, relatively isolated community of 318, Loon Lake has a number of restaurants, shops, and facilities for residents, including the Loon Lake Golf and Country Club. Cold winters and a reasonable quantity of snow create excellent conditions for cross-country skiers and snowmobilers.
