Lowville is a small community in upstate New York, nestled in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains. Lowville Town had a total population of 4,548 in the year 2000, and most of these residents made their home in Lowville Village, which had a population of 3,476 in 2000. Lowville is located next to Adirondack Park, which covers a whopping six million acres (2,428,114 hectares) of land! This makes Adirondack Park larger than the Yellowstone, Everglades, Glacier, and Grand Canyon National Parks combined, and it also has the distinction of being the largest publicly protected area in the continental United States. The park provides Visitor Interpretive Centers in Paul Smiths and Newcomb, which are open year-round to provide environmental education and serve as orientation centers for visitors. Other nearby parks include Whetstone Gulf State Park and Hough Memorial Forest.

All year round, outdoor sports and recreational opportunities abound for nature enthusiasts in Lewis County. In spring, fishing, whitewater rafting and kayaking, and all-terrain vehicle excursions are popular pastimes. Summer brings endless opportunities for golfing, camping, water-skiing, swimming, and hiking and biking along scenic routes. Fall gives hunters the opportunity to stalk prey ranging from birds and small game to deer and even the occasional black bear, while fishing enthusiasts can delight once again in the ample catches found in Lewis County's rivers and streams. For those who would rather just sit back and enjoy the beauty of the season, the Lewis County Chamber of Commerce sponsors drive-it-yourself tours that highlight a different area in the county each year. Winter brings plenty of snow and ample opportunities for snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. Ski enthusiasts need only to take a drive along Route 26 to the Snow Ridge Ski Area in Turin, a complete ski center that offers 22 slopes and trails.

Spring, summer, winter, or fall, there is always plenty to do in the pristine wilderness surrounding Lowville.
