Lynn, Massachusetts

Lynn, Massachusetts, is located on the Atlantic coast, just five miles (eight kilometers) southwest of Salem and 11 miles (18 kilometers) northeast of Boston. It is part of Essex County, and is home to 89,050 residents.

This historic community was settled in 1629, and named after King's Lynn in England's Norfolk County. Leather tanning, iron manufacturing, and shoe manufacturing were important early industries. In 1882, Elihu Thomson brought electricity to Lynn, and he and Thomas Edison formed General Electric in 1892. During World War II, America's first jet engine was built under secrecy at the Lynn General Electric Plant. In addition to shoes and electric light, Lynn has also produced some very famous residents, including religious leader Mary Baker Eddy and actress Estelle Parsons. You can learn more about the city's fascinating history at the Lynn Museum & Historical Society and Lynn Heritage State Park. After looking through the museum exhibits, take a stroll along Waterfront Park's boardwalk, and admire the beautiful mosaic mural that brings chapters of the city's history to life.

For some outdoor fun, tee off at the 18-hole Gannon Municipal Golf Course. The Lynn Woods Reservation covers 2,200 acres (890 hectares), and is the second largest municipal park in the country. These woods provide ample opportunities for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and more.
