Macon, Georgia

The city of Macon is located in central Georgia, 84 miles (135 kilometers) southeast of Atlanta. It is the county seat of Bibb County, and home to 97,255 people.

The area around Macon has been inhabited for more than 12,000 years, and groups ranging from Ice Age tribes to the Muscogee native Americans have left their mark on the land. The Ocmulgee National Monument was established to preserve the region's rich history, and offers interpretive programs along with opportunities for fishing, hiking, bird watching, and wildlife viewing. Moving forward in time, visit one of Macon's beautiful antebellum houses to get a taste of the city's Southern charm and heritage. Historic homes open to the public include Hay House, Sidney Lanier Cottage, Woodruff House, and Cannonball House. Located just outside of Macon, Cannonball House was built in 1853 and suffered damage during the Battle of Dunlap Hill. Visitors today can view both the home and the original cannonball, along with many civilian and military artifacts. Macon's Southern traditions are celebrated during annual special events, such as the ten-day Cherry Blossom Festival in spring, and the Southern Jubilee in the fall.

A variety of museums can be found in Macon, including the Tubman African American Museum, the Georgia Music Hall of Fame, and the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame. For an enlightening and educational outing, try the Georgia Children's Museum, or the Macon Museum of Arts and Sciences, which features exhibits on fine art, natural history, and astronomy.

Looking for a great night on the town? Catch a performance by the Macon Symphony Orchestra, or the latest production from Theatre Macon and the Macon Little Theatre. Popular performance venues include Mercer University's Grand Opera House and the Macon Centreplex. Children and teens can unleash their own creative talents through classes offered by Midsummer Macon.

For some outdoor fun, head to Lake Tobesofkee. This year-round recreation area covers almost 1,800 acres (728 hectares), and is subdivided into Arrowhead, Claystone, and Sandy Beach Park. The lake and its 35 miles (56 kilometers) of shoreline offer wonderful opportunities for boating, swimming, fishing, water-skiing, and sailing, while the rest of the park provides great locales for picnicking, hiking, and camping.

With the city's blend of historic and modern attractions, you'll always find something to do in Macon!
