Manhattan, Kansas

Welcome to Manhattan! No, you're not in the commercial heart of NYC, but in northeastern Kansas. The city of Manhattan is located 10 miles (16 kilometers) northeast of Ogden and 55 miles (88 kilometers) northwest of Topeka. Most of the city is located in Riley County, with a smaller portion in Pottawatomie County. Manhattan is the seat of Riley County and has a population of 44,831.

Manhattan is a vibrant community with diverse attractions. In fact, in a 2007 article, Money magazine ranked Manhattan as the #9 place to retire young in the US.

Kansas State University gives the city a charming college town vibe, and contributes greatly to the local cultural scene. Sports fans will find plenty of reasons to cheer during KSU Wildcats home games. You can also admire the 4,500 works on display at the university's Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art, or enjoy a variety of theater, music, and dance productions at the McCain Auditorium & Nichols Theatre. Off-campus, the Manhattan Arts Center enriches the lives of residents with gallery exhibits and classes, plays, concerts, and more. At the end of June, country music's hottest stars arrive for the annual Country Stampede, an event that lasts four days and attracts 140,000 fans from across the country.

Fort Riley is located just outside of Manhattan, and is one of the nation's largest military installations. Civilians are invited to view the impressive monuments along the Main Post and learn about the fort's past and present at the Museum.

Manhattan is situated on Kansas River, and in the beautiful Flint Hills region. The city offers four outstanding golf courses, including the PGA-licensed Colbert Hills Golf Course. The local Parks and Recreation Department manages 12 parks, the Eisenhower Baseball Complex, Bluemont Scenic Lookout. Outside of city limits, you'll find great hunting and fishing, along with miles of hiking and biking trails. Milford State Park and Tuttle Creek State Park are particularly popular for fishing and watersports, and Kansas State University's Konza Prairie Research Natural Area is a great place to learn about local flora and fauna. Looking for some more exotic species? Then take the whole family to Sunset Zoo to visit cheetahs, bald eagles, and adorable pygmy marmosets.

Manhattan, Kansas offers something for every age and interest!
