Manitowoc, Wisconsin

Manitowoc is a city in eastern Wisconsin, and its name comes from an Indian term that has been variously translated as "spirit land" or "devil's den." It is located on Lake Michigan's western shore, 43 miles (69 kilometers) southeast of Green Bay and 79 miles (127 kilometers) north of Milwaukee. Manitowoc is the county seat of Manitowoc County, and home to 34,053 people.

A walk through Downtown Manitowoc is a great way of familiarizing yourself with the city. This vibrant district is home to museums, theaters, stores, and restaurants, as well as historic buildings and antique shops. For another look at the city's past, head to the Pinecrest Historical Village, which features 20 restored buildings, informative exhibits, and beautiful gardens. The Wisconsin Maritime Museum is one of the region's top attractions, and features the USS Cobia, the "most completely restored" World War II submarine in America.

For a day of family fun, head to the Lincoln Park Zoo to see native animals and birds, or visit West of the Lake Gardens. Situated on a former estate, this attraction features a lovely rose garden, Japanese garden, a Sunken garden, and more. Manitowoc is also home to many fine cultural attractions. The Rahr-West Art Museum houses a great collection of 19th and 20th century American works, contemporary art, artifacts, and more. Art buffs should also visit the Rudy Rotter Museum, which features more than 17,000 sculptures. The University of Wisconsin-Manitowoc's Lakeshore Wind Ensemble holds several concerts throughout the year, while the Capitol Civic Centre hosts a variety of performances including theater, concerts, broadway plays, and popular touring acts.

Manitowoc offers plenty of recreational opportunities on both land and water. Landlubbers can enjoy a wide variety of sports, golf, and hikes along the scenic Mariner's Trail. The nearby Woodland Dunes Nature Center covers 1,200 acres (486 hectares), and provides a sanctuary for local birds and animals. For water babies, Lake Michigan and the Manitowoc River provide ample opportunity for fishing, boating, diving, and beachfront recreation. A local ferry makes regular trips across the lake, making it easy to explore all the attractions of Michigan!
