Mankato, Minnesota

The city of Mankato is located in southern Minnesota, 86 miles (138 kilometers) southwest of Minneapolis-St. Paul. It is the county seat of Blue Earth County, and has a population of 32,427.

Mankato is home to a vibrant arts and culture scene. Classical music groups include the Mankato Symphony Orchestra and the Minnesota Valley Chorale. Outstanding plays and performing arts are provided by Merely Players Theatre, and Minnesota State University and Bethany Lutheran College's performing arts departments. The city is also home to the Mankato Ballet and the Carnegie Art Center, the largest visual arts center in south central Minnesota.

Local historic attractions include the Blue Earth County Heritage Center Museum and a number of historic homes. Just six miles (10 kilometers) west of Mankato lies the remains of the 1864 Seppman Mill, a German-style wind-powered mill that once ground 150 bushels of wheat a day. History buffs should also visit the Traverse Des Sioux, a crossroads in the Minnesota River Valley that has been used by Natives, fur traders, and settlers for hundreds of years.

Kids will love a trip to the Wildlife Safari Museum, while adults can enjoy wine tasting and special events at the Morgan Creek Vineyards. Mankato also offers many recreational opportunities, including beautiful golf courses, a BMX track and miles of mountain biking trails, along with skiing and snow-tubing at Mount Kato.
