Markham, Ontario

Markham is one of nine towns/cities (the other eight being Aurora, East Gwillimbury, Georgina, King, Newmarket, Richmond Hill, Vaughan, and Whitchurch-Stouffville) that make up the Municipality of York, which is one of four municipalities (the other three being Durham, Halton, and Peel) that, with the "megacity" of Toronto, make up the Greater Toronto Area. Sound complicated? It is! All you really need to know is that living in Markham means you get small-town charm with easy access to big-city conveniences.

Markham consists of four distinct communities – Markham Village, Unionville, Milliken, and Thornhill – and is located directly north of Toronto. And it's this proximity to big-city industry that is the reason that most of your neighbors commute – Markham has a direct GO Transit rail link to downtown Toronto. Who knows? You might, too. But the trade-off for that daily commute is clean living in a small, family-oriented community.

If you're looking to step back in time, there's Main Street Markham or Main Street Unionville. Both offer a variety of unique stores and access to local produce and crafts in quaint village-like settings. If you'd rather commune with nature than your neighbors, there's the Milne Dam Conservation Park. A stop off for migratory birds, it's a great place to go bird watching. And you don't have to go down to Toronto for culture – there's the Markham Theatre, the Markham Museum, and the Varley Art Gallery. Or even big industry – as home to the Canadian corporate head offices of IBM and American Express, Markham is gaining a reputation as the hi-tech capital of Canada.

There's certainly more to Markham than its proximity to the City of Toronto!
