Marlton is an unincorporated area located within Evesham Township. The community is situated in southwestern New Jersey, approximately 15 miles (24 kilometers) southeast of Camden and Philadelphia. Marlton is part of Burlington County, and home to 10,260 people. Founded by Welsh and English farmers in 1676 and incorporated as a township in 1688, this community has had a long and interesting history. The name "Marlton" was first adopted in the early 19th century, when marl clay, which can be used as fertilizer, was found in the region. This discovery caused a building boom in the 1830s and 40s, and the marl-mining pits continued to operate until the 1930s. To learn more about this and other chapters in Marlton's past, visit the Evesham Historical Society. History buffs will also want to tour the many heritage sites scattered throughout Burlington County, including underground railroad sites, one-room schools, Quaker meeting houses, and unique local museums. Looking to keep your children occupied? The Marlton Recreation Council offers a variety of youth sports teams, including soccer, lacrosse, baseball, softball, basketball, track, and roller hockey. For budding artists, there's the Center for the Arts in Southern New Jersey, which offers visual arts classes in all media. Golf enthusiasts will be happy to know that the art center is located on the grounds of the Indian Spring Country Club, where you can enjoy a few rounds on the beautiful 18-hole course after dropping your kids off in class. Nearby natural areas include Rancocas State Park, which offers a Nature Center, great opportunities for hiking and nature-viewing, and two annual American Indian Arts Festivals sponsored by the local Powhatan Indians. The Woodford Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge offers excellent educational programs and wildlife-viewing, while bird-watchers will delight in the 250 species found at the Palmyra Cove Nature Park. For those who just can't get enough of the great outdoors, there's also the Bass River, Penn, Wharton, and Brendan T. Byrne state forests, and the Rancocas Watershed to explore.
