Marshfield, Wisconsin

Marshfield is a city in central Wisconsin, located 87 miles (140 kilometers) east of Eau Claire and 134 miles (216 kilometers) northwest of Madison. It is part of Wood County, and is home to 18,800 residents.

Marshfield is home to several excellent family attractions, the most unique one being JuRustic Park. Using rusted parts from farm and industrial machinery, amateur paleontologist has created more than 250 sculptures of extinct creatures, ranging from six-inch (15-centimeter) mosquitoes to 4,000-pound (1,814-kilogram) dragons. Also be sure to take your children to the Wildwood Zoo and the Central Wisconsin State Fairgrounds, home to the "World's Largest Round Barn." The state fair itself runs for six days each year, and delights visitors of all ages with live concerts, contests, livestock shows, and live entertainment.

Upham Mansion is the former home of Wisconsin Governor William Henry Upham, and offers a fascinating glimpse Victorian life. The traditional rose garden at the back of the house is an added delight. Also pay a visit to the beautiful Foxfire Gardens, which combines both elements of Oriental and European gardens.

University of Wisconsin, Marshfield/Wood County Campus is a major cultural hub, and home to a university theater, choral chamber, and symphony orchestra. The university's Helen Connor Laird Arts Building hosts numerous performances, while Gallery 450 exhibits works by students and regional artists. Off-campus, you'll find quality exhibits at the New Visions Gallery; and great concerts, plays, and readings at the Chestnut Avenue Center for the Arts.

The Marshfield Parks and Recreation offers excellent recreational facilities, including a community center, tennis courts, ice rink, pool, tennis courts, skate park, and trail system. For some outdoor fun, spend some time exploring the 21,330 acres (8,632 hectares) of wildlife areas found throughout Wood County. One of the closest parks is Powers Bluff, which is the highest point in the county. The area is great for hiking and picnics in the summer, and downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, and tubing in the winter. Powers Bluff is also a historic site, with Native dance rings and burial grounds. A section of Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest is a short drive north of town, and a number of state parks are also easily accessible.
