Martinez is the county seat of Contra Costa County, California, and is located on the south side of the Carquinez Strait in the San Francisco Bay Area. It's located 12 miles (19 kilometers) east of Vallejo, 27 miles (43 kilometers) northeast of Oakland, and 35 miles (56 kilometers) northeast of San Francisco. One of the most interesting features of this community in the Mount Diablo foothills is that it is reputedly the birthplace of the martini, supposedly a drink (at the time, the "Martinez Special") created by a bartender during the gold rush of the 1840s. The city is also home of the John Muir National Historic Site, once the mansion of naturalist and Sierra Club co-founder John Muir. And speaking of the natural world, Martinez has 16 city parks and a marina, and is only 22 miles (35 kilometers) north of Mount Diablo State Park, 20 miles (32 kilometers) west of Black Diamond Mines Regional Park, and less than 10 miles (16 kilometers) north of Briones Regional Park.
