East central Saskatchewan's parkland belt, where Melfort is located, is one of the most productive farm areas in Canada – and it was this fertile soil that drew settlers to the area in 1892.

Today's Melfort is home to both small and large businesses, and offers a wide variety of community services. Schooling is available in the city – from pre-school through to high school – and there is a local campus of Cumberland Regional College.

And Melfort is home to its own Junior A Hockey Team – the Melfort Mustangs. During hockey season you'll find Melfort's 5,559 residents cheering on the home team at the Northern Lights Palace Arena. The Arena – with its pool and wave pool – is also a "cool" hangout in the summer.

But the Mustangs don't just bring the community together during hockey season. They also sponsor Melfort's annual Polkafest, which welcomes hundreds of dancers with a Pig Roast on opening night. If you're not up for a polka (or a pig), there are other ways to meet your neighbors. There's the annual the Melfort Fair & Exhibition, which kicks off with the Mile Long Fair Parade, and the Back to the 50s Car Show N' Shine.

Melfort also offers plenty of reasons to get outside – golfing, hunting, fishing, and camping can all be enjoyed at one of the four nearby lakes. And Hilliard's Four Seasons Resort at Codette Lake offers downhill and cross-country skiing in the winter. Or simply grab a drink, pull out a lawn chair, and look to the night sky – the aurora borealis can be seen most nights of the year.

Close-knit community living, a hometown hockey team, and the Northern Lights … Melfort is Canadian living at its best.
