Menomonie is a city located in western Wisconsin, 24 miles (39 kilometers) northwest of Eau Claire and 61 miles (98 kilometers) east of St. Paul, Minnesota. It is the seat of Dunn County, and is home to 14,937 people. Menomonie enjoys a scenic locale near Lake Menomin and the Red Cedar River. The community developed as a lumber town, and was once nicknamed the "Queen of the Pinery." Modern-day Menomonie is a charming college town with a diversified economy that includes agriculture, manufacturing, service industries, and tourism. The Dunn County Historical Society offers a comprehensive look at the history of the region, and is headquartered in the Russell J. Rassbach Heritage Museum. The museum contains exhibits on area industries, historic events like the Civil War and the Kraft State Bank Robbery, notable locals, and more. The Historical Society also manages the Empire in Pine Museum and the Caddie Woodlawn Historical Park. Another must-see site is the c. 1859 Wilson Place Museum. This house was built by Captain William Wilson, founder of the Knapp, Stout & Company lumber company and Menomonie itself. The beautiful Mabel Tainter Memorial Theater is a heritage building and the hub of Menomonie's cultural scene. The theater offers plays and musical performances by local and touring artists, along with gallery art exhibits and a 19th century reading room. Menomonie is also the home of six art galleries and Drums Along the Red Cedar – an annual drum and bugle corps competition that takes place each June. Recreational opportunities range from thrilling races at the Red Cedar Speedway to family fun at Wakanda Water Park. In addition to the huge water park, Wakanda Park also offers boating, fishing, ball diamonds, and picnic areas. Wilson Park is another popular destination, and features weekly band concerts every summer. Menomonie is the starting point of the 14-mile-long (23-kilometer-long) Red Cedar State Trail, a favorite route for runners, bikers, and cross-country skiers. As you follow the trail along the Red Cedar and Chippewa Rivers, keep an eye out for wild birds, sandstone bluffs, and the 115-million-year-old rock formations known as the Devil's Punchbowl. On the weekend, head to the Hoffman Hills State Recreation Area, which encompasses more than 700 acres (283 hectares), and is a great spot for bird-watching, hiking, and cross-country skiing.
