Middletown is situated in central Connecticut, 15 miles (24 kilometers) south of Hartford, 24 miles (39 kilometers) east of Waterbury, and 24 miles (39 kilometers) northeast of New Haven. It is the seat of Middlesex County, and is home to 43,167 people. This historic community is situated on the Connecticut River, and local lead mines once supplied the raw materials for bullets for the Continental Army. Today, the presence of Wesleyan University and Middlesex Community College give Middletown a charming college town atmosphere, and contribute greatly to local culture. Wesleyan's Center for the Arts presents a wide range of performances by students, faculty, and international artists. Visual arts fans will find an outstanding collection at the Davison Art Center, and contemporary exhibitions at the Ezra and Cecile Zilkha Gallery. The Green Street Arts Center offers music, dance, theater, visual art, and literary classes for residents of all ages, and is a collaboration between the university, the city, and the North End Action Team. The Mansfield Freeman Center for East Asian Studies also holds community outreach programs, including art exhibitions, lectures, workshops at local schools, and has a beautiful Japanese garden that's open to the public. Before you leave campus, don't forget to cheer on the Wesleyan athletes at their next home game. Off campus, you'll find great performances at ArtFarm Theatre, and poetry, live music, and plays at The Buttonwood Tree. Kidcity Children's Museum offers hands-on learning for your little ones, while the Connecticut aMAIZEING Maze offers two miles (three kilometers) of winding trails that they'll love to explore. Historic attractions include the splendid Wadsworth Mansion at Long Hill Estate and the Middlesex Historical Society, which is housed in the 1810 General Mansfield House. Also be sure to visit the Middletown Sports Hall of Fame and the Submarine Library Museum. Three state parks are located nearby. Hurd State Park offers beautiful views of the Connecticut River, and is a great spot for bird-watching, hiking, and biking. Wadsworth Falls State Park is popular for swimming, fishing, and basking in the spray of the falls. Cockaponset State Forest is Connecticut's second largest state forest, and can be used for horseback riding, swimming, fishing, and hunting in the summer, or cross-country skiing and snowmobiling in the winter.
