Miramichi, New Brunswick

Located in northeastern New Brunswick, where the "mighty" Miramichi River meets the Northumberland Strait, Miramichi is a collection of close-knit river communities. Populated by friendly, welcoming people, visitors are not only greeted with a warm smile and a, "G'day, how's she goin'?" but are likely to be invited for a piece of pie. Or if they're really lucky, they'll receive an invitation to a traditional kitchen party, where they might learn how to play the spoons.

Miramichi has a rich cultural heritage, which you can learn about at its many festivals and fairs (including Canada's Irish Festival on the Miramichi, the Miramichi Scottish Festival, le Fêtê Nationale des Acadien, and numerous Native powwows), fiddling jamborees, and woodsmen's competitions. And with a history rich in log drives and lumberjacks, Miramichi has its share of ghost stories, such as the Dungarvon Whooper and the Headless Nun.

But for me, the biggest draw about Miramichi is the salmon! And even if you're not much of a fisherman (as I am most certainly not) and you'd rather eat it than catch it, there's a host of ways to enjoy your fish. Just ask any local – they're sure to have a unique recipe to share. Personally, I think the best way is grilled in a little butter over an open fire … with a side of fiddleheads and finished off with some of the local berries … now that's a great meal!

Miramichi … you'll come for the salmon, but you'll be hooked by the friendly, down-to-earth people.
