Mobile is located in southern Alabama, 58 miles (93 kilometers) northwest of Pensacola, 143 miles (230 kilometers) northeast of New Orleans, and 169 miles (272 kilometers) southwest of Montgomery. It is the county seat of Mobile County, and home to 198,915 residents. The city is situated on Mobile Bay, which connects to the Gulf of Mexico, making it the only saltwater port in Alabama. Mobile's proximity to the water means that its residents can enjoy a wide variety of watersports, including jet-skiing, rafting, canoeing, and sailing. Fishing enthusiasts can cast their lines close to shore, or charter a boat to experience deepwater fishing on the Gulf. For those who prefer the green of the golf course to the blue of the open waters, the Mobile Bay area is home to 21 world-class courses, including the Linksman Golf Club, the Spring Hill College Golf Course, and the Magnolia Grove-Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. For an unforgettable day-trip, visit nearby Dauphin Island. A beautiful barrier island just 33 miles (53 kilometers) south of Mobile, Dauphin offers scenic beaches, peaceful hiking trails, and the historic Fort Gaines. The island is also home to the 143-acre (58-hectare) Audubon Bird Sanctuary, which offers spectacular bird-watching opportunities. At the Estuarium at the Dauphin Island, visitors can learn all about the four major ecosystems of the region, see marine creatures up close in aquarium displays, and take a stroll along the Living Marsh Boardwalk. Mobile is blessed with another spectacular natural habitat: the Mobile-Tensaw Delta, home to alligators, bald eagles and 250 other bird species, and 230 fish species. A ride aboard any of the city's five boat tours is an excellent way of discovering the beautiful sights and abundant wildlife of the area. Another great attraction is Alligator Alley, where visitors can see more than 100 alligators in their natural habitats, and even join in during the daily feedings. In addition to natural beauty and wildlife, Mobile is also a city rich in history. The Battleship USS Alabama is one of the city's most popular attractions, and offers tours of the ship's decks, turrets, bridge, and even the captain's cabin. The park also features the USS Drum submarine, the B-52 Stratofortress, and a spyplane. Historic buildings and sites in Mobile include Fort Conde, Fort Morgan, and the Oakleigh Period House Museum. For those who'd like to combine their history with some ecology, the Bellingrath Gardens and Home offers a fantastic display of 19th century furniture and porcelain, along with beautifully landscaped gardens and grounds contained within a 905-acre (366-hectare) forest. Visitors at the garden can also take a river cruise aboard the Southern Belle. Other fantastic attractions include the Museum of Mobile, the Mobile Museum of Art, and the Gulf Coast Exploreum. A variety of arts and cultural organizations are found in the city, including the Mobile Arts Council, the Mobile Opera, the Mobile Symphony, and the Mobile Ballet. Great performing arts events can be enjoyed year-round at the Saenger Theatre and the Mobile Civic Center. Mobile is home to the oldest Mardi Gras in North America, and has been celebrating the event since 1703. Every year, spectacular floats, live marching bands, and crowds of reverlers fill the streets, and attract hundreds of thousands of visitors to the city.
