Morganton, North Carolina

The city of Morganton is the county seat of Burke County. It's located on the Catawba River, approximately 76 miles (122 kilometers) northwest of Charlotte and 118 miles (190 kilometers) southwest of Greensboro.

Downtown Morganton is a National Historic Register District that is centered Courthouse Square and the Old Burke County Courthouse. The courthouse dates from 1837 and houses a visitor center, as well as the offices of the Historic Burke Foundation. Those interested in learning about the region's past will want to visit the History Museum of Burke County, while art lovers will want to note that music and theater, and "the largest single fresco in North Carolina," are all available at the City of Morganton Municipal Auditorium (CoMMA).

Every September, the community hosts the Historic Morganton Festival, which includes live entertainment, arts and crafts exhibits, and a car show.

Canoeing, picnicking, and hiking may be enjoyed at nearby Catawba River Greenway Park. About 10 miles (16 kilometers) east of the city is South Mountains State Park, which is one of the state's most rugged. And a bit further afield, Lake James State Park provides opportunities for watersports, camping, and hiking. The park is located at the base of the Linville Gorge, a rugged and scenic gorge which is described as the "Grand Canyon of North Carolina."
